Alex is a wonderful teacher and a great friend. As a composer and musician first, he
possesses an incredible knowledge and understanding of music—an innate comprehension of the connection between music and musician. Through this creation of music, we are able to access that ephemeral third space in which resides the complex beauty of music and learning. As a teacher he is an incredible guide, providing the insight to creating musicians out of children who have little sense of musicality.

Through my 11 years of lessons with him, I have learned not only about how to play well and succeed at music, but also how important and how much of a presence music can have in my life. Alex is a brilliant teacher, able to convey the most complex of musical ideas though his explanations of phrasing, style, and character in music. He taught me how to imbue life into music, and music into life. I could not ask for a kinder, funnier, more knowledgeable, or more intelligent teacher. Possessing vast experience in teaching piano for so many years, Alex is immediately able to sense a wrong note, or a bad habit, and through exercises and instruction, he is able to coax wonderful music out of students, even when they are reluctant to practice, or facing difficulties with a piece of music. His patience, determination, and understanding make him a valuable teacher, one who I have known for the greater portion of my life, and one who embodies the virtues of a great person.
In this last year, he helped me prepare for the performance of the Grieg Piano Concerto, one of the greatest and most difficult undertakings of my life so far. Through this experience, he has not only taught me valuable musical knowledge, but also perseverance, expression, and finding deeper meanings within music. He helped me through many of my struggles with the piece, from technical difficulties to mental challenges.
He is a great friend as well, and we converse easily at each lesson about happenings in our lives as well as discussions about music. He tells great stories, and I enjoy my lessons greatly.
